For the cytology component of this course we will discuss how to obtain a diagnostic sample and sample processing (slide preparation, staining, microscopy techniques). Additionally, participants will learn an organized approach to evaluating cytologic specimens by using a cytology algorithm with cytologic examples of various neoplastic and non-neoplastic processes. Processing and evaluation of fluid samples (cavitary effusions and synovial fluid) will also be covered along with various chemistry analyses that can be performed on fluid samples (Triglycerides, Creatinine, K+, glucose, lactate, etc). The final session will be case based to solidify the knowledge gained in the other sessions. For the hematology sessions we will discuss the parts of a complete blood count, RBC/PLT indices, interpretation of scatter plots and dot plots, differential counts, RBC morphologic changes, leukogram patterns, and infectious agents. The final session will be case based to solidify the knowledge gained in the other session. This course will provide veterinarians and technicians the skills and confidence to assess CBC results in correlation with the clinical history.
